The Wedding Tradition Where Spitting At Each Other Is A Sign Of Blessing – The Maasai Wedding

The release of a slimy gusto on another may spark trouble or violence. Spitting, in many societies, is a sign of irritation or disrespect. It is widely frowned upon.

Well, the Maasai people have another idea. This unique brand of an ethnic group is based in Kenya and Northern Tanzania.

Although they are small on a population basis, these peculiar people are internationally recognized and adorned. Furthermore, they are the babe of tourists who would want to personally explore the mysteries of the continent.

At the wedding ceremony organized by the Maasai people, the bride is obligated to don a bold and colourful necklace accompanied by beads and shells. The bride’s head is shaved and lamb fat and oil are caressed on that spot.

As a show of blessing and offering congratulations, the bride’s father blesses his daughter by spitting on her forehead and breasts. This is to wish her good luck and pray that she be fertile in her marriage.

The bride then departs with her husband without looking back for fear of magically transforming into a stone. Another spectacular occasion amidst the ceremony is the denigration of the bride. In other words, in a mission to drive away bad luck, women representing the groom’s family insult the bride as she walks to her new marital home. The husband doesn’t reside in the house in which his bride stays for the next two days. The mother-in-law would then shave her head.

The wedding ceremony ultimately commences declaring them husband and wife for life. The celebration involves dancing with wooden sticks and levitation to great heights.
