Social media was recently set alight over the news of a particular footballer missing out on his matrimonial day. We are not at liberty to cast aspersions on his decision. However, as the only authentic wedding-centered online avenue in Sierra Leone, we are taking a tour with our lovely readers as to the type of wedding it was and all they should know about proxy weddings.
First and foremost, proxy weddings aren’t as negative and shameful as people put it. Now, as per the definition, a proxy wedding or proxy marriage is a wedding in which one or both of the individuals meant to tie the knot and exchange vows are not physically present, usually being represented instead by other persons. If both partners are absent a double proxy wedding occurs.
A marriage by proxy occurs when a couple may want to marry, but one or both partners cannot attend due to reasons such as imprisonment, military service, job requirements and mandates, travel restrictions, or when one of the couples lives in a surrounding where they cannot legally marry. In some countries, proxy weddings are not recognized as legally binding.
History
Proxy marriages have existed since the olden days. European royals and people of the noble standard did marry by proxy. Proxy marriages were more common during the First and Second World Wars. The soldiers were occupied in battle and had very little time to make it physically to their wedding ceremony. Therefore, it was common practice for them to marry women at home while engaged on the war front. They often participated in the ceremony via the telephone. Proxy marriages were legalized in France in 1915.
Today’s Depictions
Proxy marriages have never been legally contested in Sierra Leone, which means they are legal. Proxy marriages can also account for the representation of either parties. Sometimes, proxy marriages in Sierra Leone may traditionally add some different rhythm. On some occasions, the relation of the bride or groom will step in to represent. At times, there will be a portrait of the unavailable party in the building where the wedding is supposed to hold. This is to symbolize the presence of the absentee and create a sensation of them being around.
